Former President and current President-elect Donald Trump has reignited his interest in purchasing Greenland, the world’s largest island and a self-governing territory of Denmark. Calling US ownership of Greenland an “absolute necessity” for national security, Trump’s comments have sparked fresh debate over a proposal initially dismissed as “absurd” by Denmark in 2019.

Trump: Greenland is Key to Global Freedom and Security
On Truth Social, Trump stated:
“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
Greenland’s strategic location between the Arctic and North Atlantic has made it increasingly significant for the US and NATO, particularly amid heightened global tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The island already hosts a US airbase and radar station critical for monitoring military activity in the Arctic.
Renewed Diplomatic Efforts
Trump announced the nomination of Ken Howery, co-founder of PayPal, as the US ambassador to Denmark. Howery previously served as the US ambassador to Sweden under Trump’s administration and vowed to strengthen ties between the US, Denmark, and Greenland.
In response to the nomination, Howery wrote on X:
“I look forward to deepening the bonds between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland as we navigate these complex times together.”
The renewed proposal may test diplomatic relations, as Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly rejected the idea in 2019, calling it “absurd.” Greenland has reiterated that it is not for sale and values its autonomy.
Greenland’s Geopolitical Importance
With its vast untapped natural resources and strategic position, Greenland has become a key area of interest for global powers, including the US, China, and Russia. The Arctic region, where Greenland is located, has seen intensified military activity and competition over energy resources.
Trump’s comments come amid rising concerns over the Arctic’s security and its importance as a new frontier for global influence.
Bold Moves Beyond Greenland
Greenland isn’t the only territory in Trump’s sights. In a string of bold statements, he also suggested:
- Retaking control of the Panama Canal, which has been under Panamanian sovereignty since 1999.
- Speculating that Canada could become the US’s 51st state, a suggestion that triggered widespread debate.
While these comments have sparked significant media attention, it remains unclear how seriously Trump intends to pursue these proposals.
