The Rivian R1S electric SUV is back, and while it may not look radically different from its predecessor, what lies beneath the surface tells an entirely new story. With faster speeds, more efficient technology, and innovative updates, Rivian is once again making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market. As a finalist for the Motor Authority Best Car To Buy 2025, the R1S has a lot to live up to—and it delivers in ways that push the boundaries of what an electric SUV can be.
A Familiar Look, Revolutionary Changes
At first glance, the R1S seems largely unchanged. Subtle tweaks to the daytime running light bars, headlights, and wheels are the only visible updates. But don’t be fooled—the real transformation happens under the hood (or, in this case, under the chassis).
Rivian has swapped out its Bosch-sourced electric motors for in-house-designed units. These motors come in configurations of two, three, or four motors:
- Dual Motor: One on each axle.
- Tri-Motor: One on the front axle, two on the rear.
- Quad-Motor (coming in 2025): Two per axle for unparalleled performance.

These motors integrate their inverters for greater efficiency and power density. Output ranges from a robust 533 hp to a mind-blowing 1,025 hp, with mid-tier options delivering 665 hp and 850 hp. Performance? The slowest model rockets from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, while the fastest accomplishes the sprint in just 2.5 seconds—all while weighing approximately 7,000 pounds.
Innovative Tech That Sets a New Standard
The Rivian R1S now boasts a cutting-edge zonal electrical architecture, a game-changer that reduced the vehicle’s electronic control units (ECUs) from an already-impressive 17 to just 7. This efficiency even caught Volkswagen’s attention, prompting a $5.8 billion investment to access the technology.
Paired with its new architecture, the R1S retains its signature air suspension and adaptive dampers. The hydraulic control system, borrowed from McLaren supercars, replaces traditional anti-roll bars, enabling this SUV to corner like no other frame-supported off-road vehicle.
Battery and Range Options
Rivian has redefined its battery packs, offering three sizes:
- Standard: 92.5 kWh with a range of 270 miles.
- Large: 109.4 kWh with a range of up to 350 miles.
- Max: 141.5 kWh with a range of up to 420 miles.
Range depends on motor configuration, wheel size, and other factors, but even the base model provides enough for most adventures.
On-Road and Off-Road Performance
Whether it’s tearing down a racetrack or tackling rugged terrain, the R1S excels. On the track, the SUV demonstrates relentless speed, incredible handling, and precise steering feedback, making it hard to believe it’s a 7,000-pound electric vehicle.
Interior: Luxurious but Not Perfect
The R1S interior remains a refined space, featuring a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 15.6-inch touchscreen that are intuitive to use. However, some practical updates are still missing. A volume knob and a few physical buttons would enhance usability, and the second and third rows feel more cramped than rivals like the Kia EV9 due to the frame-supported design.
Cargo space isn’t entirely flat due to battery packaging, and Rivian’s decision to make the once-standard carabiner-shaped key an optional accessory feels like a misstep for a vehicle starting at $71,700.
Is the R1S Worth the Price?
With the Tri-Motor configuration pushing the price to $109,400, the Rivian R1S isn’t cheap—but few question its value. Between its innovative technology, jaw-dropping performance, and luxury features, it continues to set the benchmark for electric SUVs.
The Competition Is Fierce
The Rivian R1S faces stiff competition for Motor Authority Best Car To Buy 2025. Rivals include:
- An electric sports car from Hyundai.
- A sporty electric SUV from Porsche.
- Luxury electric SUVs from Acura and Mercedes-Benz.
- A gas-powered luxury coupe from Mercedes-AMG.
